Development and application of the depression-reduction group counseling for depressed children

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to develop the Depression-Reduction Group Counseling for depressed children and verify the effects of the Depression-Reduction Group Counseling on decreasing depression of the depressed children. Participants consisted of 20 sixth-grade children who showed depression on a high level in the pretest, and they were divided and assigned into an the experimental group of five and control group of five. The research design was the pretest, posttest, follow-up test control group design. The experimental group children participated in a Depression-Reduction Group Counseling of 12 sessions for 3 weeks(four days a week, 60 minutes per session) from 16, September, 2003 to 2, October, 2003 at the elementary school in Daegu. The instruments of measurement used in this study were the Children¡¯s Depression Inventory(Kovacs, 1981). The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation and was verified a independent t-Test between the treatment group and the control group observing differences between pre and post, pro and follow-up tests. This Depression-Reduction Group Counseling included 4 steps for Building Relationship, Psychological Investigation, Insight, Re-education. The major findings of this study are as follows : The Depression-Reduction Group Counseling decreased the participants¡¯ depression in the following areas; Depressive feeling, Behavior disorder, Lost interest, Self-depreciation, Physical symptoms.
